The U.S Department of Energy has taken these questions into consideration and has allotted around $34.5 million for the research and development of Data Science tools and algorithms to solve the climate and energy problems that we face today.
What Is DOE Funding?
The US Department Of Energy is conducting a series of funding to bring up innovations in the field of energy and climate solutions using data science as a tool. DOE has asked data scientists to harness cutting-edge computational tools for innovations in clean energy and climate solutions.
The funding will be done in two parts where $21 million is allocated for Basic Energy Sciences(BES) and the remaining $13.5 million is allocated to Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR). In this round of funding, more consideration is given for the development of data science tools to tackle problems faced by the power sector.
Challenges that are going to be tackled:
BES handles $21 million allocated for solving energy and related issues. The expected problems that will be solved are
- New and innovative clean energy solutions
- Basic Science Challenges.
- Innovative energy storage solutions.
- Improving energy efficiency.
While ASCR handles $13.5 million allocated for solving climate and related issues. The expected problems that will be solved are
- Prediction of extreme and abrupt climate changes.
- Prediction of trends in climate pattern.
- Improving the current weather broadcasting systems.
Previous Events Of DOE Funding:
This is not the first time DOE is funding organizations to come up with innovative ideas. They do funding when they realize that there is a problem that needs to be solved. It has also announced a funding of $52.5 million for Industrial Assessment Centers to help American manufacturers and wastewater treatment facilities improve their efficiency, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint.
This new funding is an investment in both the infrastructure and next-generation clean energy workforce we need to tackle the climate emergency and meet President Biden’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As we have discussed above the funding will be carried out in two parts. As we have discussed in previous articles the availability of high-speed data at cheap prices and high-performance electronic devices at cheap prices give rise to the accumulation of data in a huge pile. Data Science and big data were used to carry out a study on the number of trees that were cut down associated with commercial deforestation during the time interval of 2001-2015. A project in California run by Planet Labs and the California Air Resources Board is launching a satellite to detect origin points of climate pollutants, such as methane, to target specific locations for mitigation.
