DOE Announced $34.5 M for Data Science and Computation Tools to Advance Climate Solutions and Energy

Introduction

We have always been talking about the benefits of data science and machine learning in our previous articles( haven’t read any yet? click here). We have discussed what is data science and how corporates use it as a tool to solve their problems. Today let’s see how data science can help government authorities to solve environmental issues that we face these days.

Can the rising demand for electric power meet the needs of humanity in the future or is the current way of production of energy is sufficient to meet the rising demand? Will we be able to survive the abrupt and sudden changes in climate?

The U.S Department of Energy has taken these questions into consideration and has allotted around $34.5 million for the research and development of Data Science tools and algorithms to solve the climate and energy problems that we face today.

What Is DOE Funding?

The US Department Of Energy is conducting a series of funding to bring up innovations in the field of energy and climate solutions using data science as a tool. DOE has asked data scientists to harness cutting-edge computational tools for innovations in clean energy and climate solutions.

The funding will be done in two parts where $21 million is allocated for Basic Energy Sciences(BES) and the remaining $13.5 million is allocated to Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR). In this round of funding, more consideration is given for the development of data science tools to tackle problems faced by the power sector.

Challenges that are going to be tackled:

BES handles $21 million allocated for solving energy and related issues. The expected problems that will be solved are

  • New and innovative clean energy solutions
  • Basic Science Challenges.
  • Innovative energy storage solutions.
  • Improving energy efficiency.

While ASCR handles $13.5 million allocated for solving climate and related issues. The expected problems that will be solved are

  • Prediction of extreme and abrupt climate changes.
  • Prediction of trends in climate pattern.
  • Improving the current weather broadcasting systems.

Previous Events Of DOE Funding:

This is not the first time DOE is funding organizations to come up with innovative ideas. They do funding when they realize that there is a problem that needs to be solved. It has also announced a funding of $52.5 million for  Industrial Assessment Centers to help American manufacturers and wastewater treatment facilities improve their efficiency, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint.

This new funding is an investment in both the infrastructure and next-generation clean energy workforce we need to tackle the climate emergency and meet President Biden’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In 2019 DOE has Announced $59 Million to Accelerate Advanced Vehicle Technologies Research. If you want to know more about their funding click here

How To Take Part In DOE Funding :

As we have discussed above the funding will be carried out in two parts. If you want to take part in any funding program conducted by BES you have to apply for that program from their official website (click here). There are many early-career research programs and many other funding programs for startups and companies that are having innovative energy projects. All details of the above mentioned can be found on their official website.

On the other hand, if you want to conduct research on climate issues visit the official website of ASCR (click here). ASCR program’s mission is to discover, develop, and deploy computational and networking capability to analyze, model, simulate, and predict complex phenomena important to the Department of Energy and the advancement of science.

How Data Science Can Be Used To Find Solutions For Climate-Related Issues

As we have discussed in previous articles the availability of high-speed data at cheap prices and high-performance electronic devices at cheap prices give rise to the accumulation of data in a huge pile. Today our modern technology is enough to handle this tremendous amount of data and new computation-based analysis tools have helped scientists and researchers better understand and predict the nature of complex scientific processes.

Some of these tools have been used to figure out how solar cells can be designed to absorb light more efficiently, or how captured carbon dioxide can be converted into usable products instead of re-entering the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide management has played a monumental role in the reduction of the greenhouse effect.

New technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and applied data science in general, have the potential to advance our understanding and ability to effectively address climate change. As we all know technology can be a great catalyst for change, these cutting-edge technologies could be used to tackle almost every issue that we face today.

The major contribution of data science is that it provides robust information and offers ways to broadcast that information to the public. The rise of big data has helped scientists understand past and present environmental and weather conditions to establish reliable trends, This has helped us to have a better foresight of what is most probably going to happen and we will get time to be prepared for it.

Data generated by IoT systems can help us to conserve energy and water. This collected data also helps scientists produce visualizations on climate change that better communicate to the public the real statistics.

Data science also helps deepen understanding of how different industries contribute to climate change and where the most critical environmental shifts—such as deforestation—are happening so that scientists and policymakers can take effective action.

Data Science and big data were used to carry out a study on the number of trees that were cut down associated with commercial deforestation during the time interval of 2001-2015. A project in California run by Planet Labs and the California Air Resources Board is launching a satellite to detect origin points of climate pollutants, such as methane, to target specific locations for mitigation. These are some of the real examples of using data science to solve climate problems.

How Data Science Can Be Used To Find Solutions For Energy-Related Issues

Electric energy is one of the most important things that almost everyone across the globe uses daily. Recent innovations like electric vehicles,5G communication systems, induction charging highways .etc added to rising power demand. In 10 years the overall Power industry is growing into a total valuation of $2.4 trillion.

Data science can be used in this industry to

  • Cut the costs
  • Optimize investments
  • Reduce risk

Reducing price with data science is a popular application in this industry, much work has focused on improving maintenance and equipment monitoring. For this, an interdisciplinary approach is taken by data scientists. A Survival analysis algorithm used in the medical field to calculate the chances of survival of a patient is used here to monitor the life span of machinery. Delivering innovation by borrowing ideas from other sectors, is another popular application of data science.

Optimizing investment decisions takes several forms including better internal resource allocation and assisting investors. Data science also contributes to improving public safety by providing better monitoring and oversight.

The use of data science and analytics is expected to grow in the energy industry. In a low oil price environment, management will seek cost reduction insights from data. During growth periods, data science will guide management decision-making with better insights to improve production and adjust to market demand. The continued growth of data science tools and vendors will also support the trend.

Conclusion

In this article, we have seen how data science can be used to tackle the environmental issues that we face today. The importance of data science was identified by the American government and sufficient funding is given by the US Department Of Energy to carry research and development of new cutting-edge data science tools.

We have also described in brief previous funding programs by DOE. Let us hope that these funds will be utilized properly to develop new technology to solve the problems that we face. And together along with technology and science lets help earth from greenhouse effects, deforestation .etc
